"Why not just get an SUV?"

The back of an SUV is tiny compared to any pickup with a
bed top, even the short bed Mav. You'd be talking full size $UV at that point. Go anywhere in the Pac NW, Mid west, Eastern US and you'll see a ton of pickups with bed toppers. It rains like hell and you need a topper.

Carrying cargo and passengers in the same area is fundamentally unsafe in an accident. Sad but true for us Minivan, wagon and SUV owners. Right now I carry muddy bikes and wet, muddy inflatable boats in the back of my minivan. Used motor oil, trash, pets, firewood, loose mulch, topsoil, stinky compost. The list goes on and on. Did we mention toppers are removeable?
Not to mention the cargo area of SUVs is full of plastic taking up space.

I'd like to see the cargo area of a Bronco sport vs. the snug top Maverick side by side. Maybe I'm missing something.

Back the main point about visibility flaw of the snug top. Sure would be nice to have a few more options before committing to the expensive snug top. I like the snug top just fine though (besides the vis issue). I don't mind the mid-rise either. Gives a bit more cargo space and probably more aerodynamic. Fuel economy could be the same or better with the snug top.

Could you put a canoe on the cap?
Ah, the 'ole Mav canoe question, he he. My canoes are inflatable, that's why I only need the short bed Mav. Trailer seems like the way to go for a real canoe. Anything on the roof dumps fuel economy too. Just looking at the side view of the Maverick, seems like an aftermarket cab roof rack (+ short antenna) would make the most sense after a trailer, especially for a FWD Maverick. Center the rack on the vehicle, not the tiny bed in the back. Canoers drive those long bed Tacos for a reason and I don't think the Mav. can replace that functionality with a 4.5 foot bed.

My friend has the bronco sport and I have the MAV with the cap on it and I can tell you that the cargo area in his is significantly smaller than the Mavericks bed.

With the canoe if you don't mind having something sticking significantly out behind the truck you can always get one of those tow hitch mounted extendable supports and have the canoe hang out the bed of the truck and sit on that support but you would have to be really careful about turning and backing up because it's going to stick back quite aways and you won't be able to have the tailgate down so you won't be able to see with the camera.

I seem to get roughly the same mileage with a snug top as the truck without gets but the only other Maverick I have to compare it to with any amount of driving time is a hybrid I'm averaging 24 and a half miles to the gallon overall. If I reset the counter and take a long drive where I'm easy on the throttle that gets close to 30.

Oh, there's a few ways to carry a long canoe (or anything long). I have a small Buick Encore and I use two roof racks or, if I want easy access via the hatch, I use my hitch mounted "T" bar and one of the roof racks. Makes the canoe easy to mount too. With the "T" bar I can lower the tailgate too. I never noticed a mpg drop with the canoe on top either. I had a long bed Toyoturd and it rusted away to nothing (good engine though).

Haha, carrying a canoe on an Encore and not an Enclave. Pretty cool! I'd have to see a photo, though. Is the T bar in the vertical position? I think folks are still trying to solve the Maverick no roof rack issue (both cab and bed top). It was a bit of a miss by Ford to not include the side rails like a Bronco Sport has. The vertical t-bar and cab roof rack may allow a canoe with the no-rack snug top.
