Today I started on building my bed rack to eventually add a roof top tent and solar shower. I haven't found anything I liked that was affordable while also retaining the usability of the hard trifold so here we are.
PXL_20230609_212328598.jpg

i started off with a 1020 aluminum roof rack picked up on Facebook for somewhat cheap hoping to disassemble and reuse the material to build the complete rack but after thinking about it the aluminum wasn't beefy enough for what i wanted so decided to keep it intact and pick up some steel to build the uprights, also makes it easier to fabricate some stronger supports and weld.

my original plan was to do a clamp style mount but it just wasn't sturdy and the box was flexing too much so for the rear I tapped the upper tie down holes to bold the rack to it and i feel confident now that its not going anywhere.

Tomorrow i will have all day to finish it off, i had about 5 hours into it today. i just need to figureout a stronger mount for the front and drill the holes to mount the rack. Not sure ill keep the rack, i might be better off selling it and just welding more steel tubing to join all the towers. Once i get my tent and know exactly where it bolts too i might do just that.
Bed rack looks awesome

You did a nice job. I tried pulling my 14 ft. aluminum boat with my hybrid. I just don‘t feel comfortable using. Maybe it‘s just me.
I went to the local Jeep dealer to get a hitch put on my Cherokee. They want $2000 to install a hitch. They want 8 hours labor at $180 per hour for the wiring.

Plans changed this morning once I got to the shop and decided to paint the lower plastics. I had everything ready to go for it so why not. Started by just jumping into it with the disassembly, rear bumper first because it was familiar from the hitch install. The rocker covers came off next, never seen clips like that before on the underside of them it took a while to figure out how to remove them but i got it figured out. Followed by the front bumper.

sanded with 150 grit, I tried 220 but it didn't seem like it was doing much to the plastic visually, so I stepped it up but 150 but was just a bit too aggressive but it worked out. Adhesion promoter and 4 good coats of primer later it was ready to prep.

Masked off what i wanted masked, tried to go for a 'what would painted oem bumpers look like' and this was the outcome.

Also painted the grille bar while waiting for the primer to bake...

Final outcome I am happy with, just needs some touch ups on the black and I can say its another job done. If ford made a stx package for the maverick, this is what I would envision it looking like, now all I need is a ranger stx bedside decal and I can say the aesthetics are finished. Add another colour matched maverick to the list!

Wow! That is awesome looking. As much as I liked the black plastic framing the truck, this completely changes the look to something—well, classy. Again, amazing look.
