Hey all, it's officially summer when I get the kayak ready to go out.
Rolled it in to check the fit, kayak is 10.5' length. Nose in first left too much weight on the tailgate and overhang, so I flipped it around and I think I can do this without a bed extender. There is a 4' overhang from the end of the tailgate to the end of the kayak, not sure with the laws are here in Cali.
I'll have a red flag on it when I transport, just trying to eliminate any extras and keep things simple, suggestions?

"According to the United States Department of Transportation's Federal Size Regulations law, cargo can overhang a vehicle in the front by 3 feet, on the side by 4 inches and in the rear by 4 feet."

More specifically.... " Per CVC Section 35410, the load upon a vehicle, trailer or semitrailer shall not extend to the rear beyond the last point of support for a greater distance than that equal to two-thirds of the length of the wheelbase."

https://dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/legal-truck-access/overhang

You can legally overhang 6.71 feet if my numbers are correct. Wheelbase of Maverick being 121 inches. Assuming you want to follow CA statute and not the US DOT.

It is interesting to see how different states phrase it. I am in Washington and this is how they say it for me.

"No vehicle shall be operated upon the public highways with any part of the permanent structure or load extending in excess of fifteen feet beyond the center of the last axle of such vehicle."

Thanks for the info, is the 6.71’ measured from the tail lights or the end of my tailgate? It’s close…

There is what's allowed, and what is prudent. Please don't kill any pedestrians or cyclists when that load swings wide at turns. I'm pretty sure most Maverick drivers are cautious and attentive. But I'm not sure they all understand physics.

I get that some people can't afford trailers, or can't lift kayaks and the like over the cab (at 65+, I can't). I'd just advise to have friend or family drive the loaded maverick (with protruding kayak) through a few left and right turns while you watch from a trailing car. Then you'll have a mental model of how wide your particular load will swing. Imagine a cyclist next to you at that stop sign for a left turn. And then see how close you would come to whacking them.

Not trying to insult anybody's intelligence here. Just saying "be aware". Oh, and BTW - nice Cactus Gray - it's become one of my favorite Maverick colors.

Makes sense, point well-taken.

Maybe invest in a nice rack that has easy load features? As a woman kayaker myself, I know all too well the challenges of loading and unloading a boat from a vehicle…but there are rack accessories to help us. Safety on the road is important and so is our love of paddling - invest in both! Love your truck btw 😀 I am still waiting for mine….

Thanks for the suggestion, I have a rack on wheels that makes it easy to load in and out of the truck, once I get to the water it gets a little rough. I slide it out and put the Wheeleez on and hope someone is around to help me get it back in. Typically someone waiting for my parking spot, lol.
Do you have any links to share? What do you use for loading?
By the way, what color Mav did you order?

What has everyone used for bow and stern line anchor points? I’ve used my yakima overhaul bed racks for a 16’ kayak, but only on back roads. I need bow and stern lines for highway use. Any good anchor points folks have identified on front of truck? I could probably rig something around the tow hitch for a stern line.
