I found one dirt cheap to use as an alternative to one of the rather expensive wireless options and would be interested in any thoughts, reviews etc. of it's functionality. (And, yes, I'm well aware of the privacy issues everyone has with its "always listening" status.) I'm more interested with how the tech functions, reliability etc.

Thanks.

I had one of the early ones from the invite-only launch. With the dedicated mic it's more reliable and responsive at picking up voice command initiation than say just running the app on your phone. Although after a little over a year it stopped pairing with my phone and simply wouldn't reconnect (sounds like this still isn't uncommon). I switched to a Roav Viva which also doubled as providing Quick Charge ports.

Just as a bit of an update: using just the Alexa app for listening was being troublesome because my phone likes to kill the process regardless of battery setting. I hooked up the Roav Viva but with wireless Android Auto (via AA-Wireless adapter) it doesn't seem to understand how to output. Telling it to play via USB just played out the phone speaker and with Bluetooth it only played really crappy mono. Just for the heck of it I dug out my old Alexa Auto adapter and lo and behold it actually paired up and appears to pipe audio correctly.

I've been using my Echo Auto for about a week now and it's been performing flawlessly. I discovered that it's better to power it through the 12v with the adapter because the power is live all the time and if I have to run a few errands I don't have to wait for it power up every time I stop and start. I'm pleased with it so far.
