I recently ordered an Infinity powered sub from Crutchfield. I wired it to the rear speaker and power from the battery under the seat.
It it set to sense audio and powers up when the radio is on. No audio...a second unit does the same thing. I reversed polarity of the speaker and tried all the settings with no luck...any ideas before I scrap this?

Tons of threads on adding a sub.

The OEM rear speakers are 4" and the signal to them is extremely limited on bass from the head unit unless you change things in FORScan.

Speaker signal sensing is also a poor way to power-on the amp. These trucks have electrical activity even when powered down/locked/etc that might activate your amp and leave it on more than you want. Dedicated turn-on lead is the way to go, but has to be wired up.

People will probably need more clarity on "wired it to the rear speaker" in order to help troubleshoot. Where is the connection, what color wires, etc.

Are you sure you tapped the correct wires for the speakers? When I tapped mine I verified them with an old speaker I had lying around.

Not sure if you are aware but the sound should be set to all seats/passengers to ensure that the bass is not removed/reduced to the rear speakers, also ensure that the fader is not some or all the way forward. (I am assuming that you tapped the rear speaker wires).

FYI - I tapped the rear speaker wires for my amp/sub to auto turn on and it works perfectly for me. Some suggest that the bass is removed from the single but I do not believe that this is a case, based on my results and from the research I did at the time I beleive that the rear speakers have an inline filter built in to reduce the bass.

Check Occupancy mode setting my infinity sub powered on i heard thump but no sound till I reset "occupancy mode" setting back to "all seats" -- i was tapped into back speaker at back door threshold

On dash screen:
Settings > Sound > Occupancy mode: Driver -> All seats {changed back to default "All Seats"}

It is wired literally at the rear speaker. Not sure how the volume would have enough amplitude to drive the powered amp.

Shorted the wires and the sound stopped, so I'm sure they're wired correctly

Well I would imagine that if there was electrical activity the speaker would make some noise. I am literally wired to the 2x wires at the speaker. This should be enough to drive the powered amp. It does power on when the audio is turned on and powers off when the radio is off and the car running. If I turn the volume up to full I still get nothing but loud sound from the factory speaker...

The "electrical activity" I'm talking about can probably make noise like pops or clicks - it's just that you are either not in the truck, or in the process of opening the door, or being distracted by other relays and noises from elsewhere. Anyway, a dedicated turn-on lead is just a common recommendation. If it is working for you as-is, cool.

The bigger issue is there are very little to no bass frequencies in the signal you tapped into. Besides protective equalization baked in by the truck itself, I think there is a bass-blocking capacitor on the speakers too. If you wired there directly, your signal to your subwoofer never had a chance.

Like I said, there are plenty of good, helpful audio threads. This one gets juicy on page 2-3 and I highly recommend reading it:

Turns out it was a bad unit from Crutchfield...
