CAFE standards. They need to sell more high mpg vehicles. This also pulls people off of low mpg large trucks raising the overall average.

Ford is making very little if any on the maverick. Standardized components across the platform lowers cost as well. I also think ford is trying to get some first time vehicle buyers hooked on the Ford brand. I have a feeling a lot of maverick sales will be to people who have never bought a brand new vehicle.
That is me to a T. It has what I need, a bed and 4 door and I was able to get it for a reasonable price since it is completely new.

My grandfather used to work for Reynolds Aluminum (he helped invent the aluminum can) and then 3M and his quip to me was always "no company ever does anything to lose money, you just may not see it" and I agree with a lot of the sentiments already said about the shared platforms and Mexico manufacturing etc.

Bloomberg did a good job with the quotes from Fords Hau Thai-Tang chief product platform and operations officer..(no I dont work for Bloomberg, not a shill LOL)

Now that's not a good thing to hear. But thanks for sharing that. It's nice to know up front, you know, set expectations.
The good news is that we can look at the Bronco Sport as a guinea pig and hope they worked some of these kinks out for the Maverick. That might be wishful thinking, but I almost expect there to be some issues considering it's a first year of a new model at a low starting price. I'm okay with that as long as Ford makes things right if there are issues.

I was thinking about this earlier and I don't necessarily feel it's "affordable", I think we've just been tricked into thinking it's "affordable" because all mid-size and full-size vehicles have become so "un-affordable."

7 years ago I had a hard time convincing myself that I needed a brand new 2014 F150 SuperCrew that was a loaded XLT FX4 for $38,000 out the door, fresh off the truck only 3 miles on it. Passed on the deal and now here I am looking at an AWD Lariat Maverick that's nearly pushing that same price before any incentive of dealer discount. That same F150 similarly optioned today has inflated to a cool $55,000 making it beyond unreasonable for what I'd ever spend on a truck. I could have had that 2014 paid off by now, and the only look I would probably be giving the Maverick would be solely based on the fuel economy. Bigger problem is I can't even get that same 2014 clean, used but low miles for under $30,000 now. Unbelievable times.
I think this article puts "affordable" into perspective:

I've read that the Bronco was pushed through production to get in on the street and now is suffering from fit and finish issues that should've been addressed in early production. I believe (and hope) that lesson is not going to be repeated on the Maverick.

I saw it and my thought was a loss leader..... I think CAFE ( Corporate Average Fuel Economy ) may be the issue. Back in 1997 I bought a new Honda Civic which was the cheapest new car I liked and I was told (no longer remember who) that it was cheap cause they wanted to sell a lot of them to offset the higher-end cars which got worse mileage. The 2010 Toyota Yaris seemed like the same deal, and enter the Ford Maverick. I don't know how much they make on each model they sell, but what else do they gain by selling a lot of high mileage vehicles?

I look forward to seeing in the future a real a la carte ordering system, where you can pick and chose exactly the options you want instead of a bundle of stuff were you only really want 2 items out of the 7 in the bundle. I hope it's not to far in the distance future.
Same here. Some automakers use that as their primary model (MINI), while others scoff at the idea entirely (Honda).

More options are (literally) better than fewer, but I see both sides. On the one hand, having preconfigured packages makes it easier for the automaker to crank 'em off the assembly line, more likely that you will find what you want on the lot, and easier to find on the second-hand market if preowned is your thing.

But on the other hand, preconfigured packages mean that you will almost be guaranteed to have a couple features that are of no value to you.

I typically buy preowned, but with Ford it's a bit of a challenge. For example, the F-150's ER fuel tank (36 gal) is a standalone option. There's no way to know if a truck has one unless you look up the original window sticker online or physically look underneath the vehicle. This would be an issue even if I wanted an off-the-lot brand-new one.

Compare that to say, Toyota. All Tundras that are SR5 Premium and above come standard with the 36 gallon fuel tank and standard with the HD tow package.

I also think its to take market share early.
I can get a loaded Mav for 32.
I went for the hybrid.
I intend to use it as a service vehicle for work and get paid back .56 cents a mile.
If i was to go eco id just keep my sportage.
