No stress, it's just that I spent 45+ years in industry that uses heating elements, and question is not IF they'll fail, but WHEN. I'd just like to minimize their use, and hopefully extend their longevity, past the warranty period.

Nothing ? Really, can be very little but cannot be nothing! There are no magic heating elements.
You're right. There is NO perpetual motion machine. Heated outside mirrors could possibly cost a Hybrid owner maybe one-tenth of one percent in MPG in colder climates. But those cold-weather owners might appreciate a clear view in their outside rearview mirrors even after they pull out of an enclosed garage. I know I do.

This doesn't seem like a big deal. I don't know why we're stressing about it.

No stress here in AZ, might use the heat when I go to my cabin; but not real useful in the Phx area.
