Harbor Freight Bed Extender in Use

Erickson makes one that can be configured to extend far enough from the truck so you can lower the tailgate. That way I can carry my kayaks, 20 and 16 footers, on top and a couple of bikes in the bed. This was my solution before I saw a cradle that allowed a bike wheel to rest on top of the closed tailgate, while the frame of the bike is clamped to the side rail.

Move to Venice and skip the truck (just kidding). Actually I built 2 trapezoids out of 2x4s and put them in the bed with cross braces to haul my 11.5'Dagger Blackwater. I know I could easily get 3 up there on their sides. They are 2" higher than the cab and the boat extends over the cab and cross braces unbolt for storage. I have less than $50 including paint into it.

I needed to haul stuff to the dump and move my daughter out of her college dorm. I did not want to rent a UHaul trailer. So I spent $50 with a coupon at Harbor Freight to buy the hitch extension and about $20 in wood at Lowe’s for my 2024 Maverick Hybrid. It took me about 1 day to build with stuff I already had in my garage like the plywood and wood screws, but it works great! My bed is 9 feet long with the extender. It’s very secure, easy to take apart and store.

I also spend a little time to make this custom paddleboard, kayak or longboards extender on my Thule bike hitch rack.

I built a deck using 12 foot boards, and with the tailgate hooked in the half way position and the extender at its highest setting, the wood had 3 points of contact with about 2 feet of overhang.

Worked out really well, and managed to get 60mpg the 8 miles back from Home Depot.

Well, yeah it's a truck!
