Hey everyone, was chaning the oil and noticed this. Shining a flashlight into the oil fill plug does not have any light coming out of this crack, so is this not a portal into the engine? Also I spilled oil in here so I hope that's not an issue

So I didn't mess with it during the oil change and it's obviously been like this a while. I had the hood open and revved it and nothing was coming out of there the only issue of course is that I've spilled it there and so obviously I don't want to have a fire but what on Earth could those gaps possibly be

Huh? Not sure what you're talking about...

Are you talking about the reinforcing ribs in the valve cover?

@Flub this angle might help you better understand the setup. The indentations in the head that you show in your picture, marked with a green "X", are under the outer reinforcing ribs of the valve cover outlined in blue. The flat sealing surface of the head is inboard of that, outlined in red. The indentations aren't an open "portal".

To get the oil out of that indentation, blow it out of the holes with compressed air while covering the area with a rag to keep it from spraying everywhere. If you don't have compressed air, push paper towel down in between the reinforcing ribs to soak it up.
