Hello all, I'm new here and found answers on social media to be rather uninformed, so I'm hoping you can help!

I've been obsessed with the new small trucks since their inception. Always loved the Ridgeline, thought the Santa Cruz was cool and was elated when the Maverick came out.

In 2022 I had an older Ranger (90's body style, not the new one) at the end of its life and had to move on. I tried hard to get a Mav, but they were impossible to find. I settled for a used Edge with the factory towing package.

I treat the Edge like a small truck. It does amazingly well, but doesn't have the payload capacity of a truck, and it's short wheelbase can make for a bumpy ride while towing. I'm starting to see issues with the suspension, and several other maintenance items are now coming due. It is however, the most comfortable vehicle I've ever owned.

The Edge is not holding its value well (especially after production ended) and as with many cars in 2022, I paid a little too much for it. Between some rebates, a dealer offer and a bit of saved cash, I have an opportunity to step away from the Edge without rolling over negative equity or performing any of the maintenance/repairs it needs. I'm obsessed with the 2025 exclusive green on the Maverick, so that's pushing my timing too.

I'm looking at new 2025's, but no matter how I crunch numbers, a Lariat trim is likely out of my price range. I'm probably looking at and XLT with the 4k towing package. This would have the 2.0L and AWD as well.

I live in snowy SW Michigan, regularly pull around a 2,000 lb camper, put about 15-16,000 miles per year on the truck, so need really good gas mileage (the Edge flirts with 30 mpg hwy) to make the commute affordable. I don't care about the back seat (just two of us, and we have a Kia K4 sedan with plenty of space if the need arises.)

So my questions (thank you for reading this far!) are:

1) Will I miss my Edge? I've certainly never had anything this "luxurious" before, even though it doesn't fully match my needs. Anyone else moved from one to the Mav?

2) Are the cloth seats nice? Overall do you find them comfortable and workable? Or is anyone really regretting it?

3) The perception online of the Mav is "too small" and "cramped" and a lot of folks seem to think it's too close in size to the Escape. In my brief test drive, I didn't feel that way, but am I overlooking something?

Note: I'm open to considering other choices, but full sized trucks (and the new Ranger) are not an option, they are overkill for my purposes and too expensive to buy and fuel. I also need to tow reliably on road trips, so buying an old farm truck to tow/haul is also not a solid option for me. I need a single vehicle that can tow, haul and commute.

Any help/advice is appreciated ! Picks of what I have and what I'm thinking about below:

went from and Edge (actually had 2 of them) to an Escape and now to the Mav. The Mav is definitely not anywhere near the size of the Escape. Found that when I 1st got the Mav and drove thru a parking space to the next, I never drove far enough in because the length was so much longer than the Escape. Escape 181.3. Edge 188.8, Explorer 198.8. Mav 199.7... Note... The Mav is over 18" longer than the Escape and is actually almost an inch longer than the Explorer. Took some getting used to when parking. hahahaha

Haha, something I'll have to watch for if I get one! The longer wheelbase is a huge positive for me. The Edge has the power to stop and go with a trailer, but boy does it rock on country roads or bad interstate.

We heat our house primarily with wood pellets and have done a lot of work on the yard (removing dead trees, rebuilding retaining walls, etc, etc) and towing a trailer with 2,500 lbs of material in it is a brutal ride behind the Edge, even if it's technically rated for it.

Had the 3.5 6 cyc edge then the 2.0 turbo 4 which actually pulled better than the 6. Towed an 11' snowmobile trailer (close to 3000 lbs loaded) with all of them and did notice some front to back rocking on all of them. Surprisingly noticed less on the shorter Escape. Escape was Titanium vs SEL on Edges. Escape had taughter suspension which may have accounted for it. Went up to the Mav when I upgraded the trailer and felt that I did not want to tow so close to the max on the Escape. All 3 prev vehIcles had 3500 max tow.

So you are saying the Maverick doesn't seem like it wants to tow 3,000 lbs very well?

No, not what I am saying. The Escape towed better than the Edge. I wet up the Mav to be able to tow the heavier weight of the new tailer (450 or so extra lbs). Mav tows great. Mileage is 13's, same as the Escape even though the Mav us a much bigger vehicle. Seems it is the wind resistance that effects the milage more so than the weight. Towed the new trailer empty with the Escape and getting similar mileage to that I an getting with the Mav loaded with two 4 stroke snowmobiles.

Ah, I got it. I've towed with an old Escape with the 1.5L, and the turbo wasn't very happy...

I get it with the wind resistance. I can tow 2,500 lbs with the Edge and it has no issues. But a mower trailer behind it (with the big ramp) gives the Edge fits, even empty.

My 2020 Escape had basically the same drivetrain as the Mav (2.0 turbo) has, so no real issue towing close to 3000lbs (clamshell snowmobilile trailer) that had total height of 74". New trailer is 2' longer, 450 lbs heavier and 90" tall.

The engine makes a huge difference. I really like the updated 2.0L (had coolant intrusion issues until sometime in 2019). The 1.5 that the base Escapes come with is a very different engine. That 2017 Escape (my dad's) doesn't even get as good of gas mileage in real world use as the 2.0L because its sitting at high RPM's all the time to just get an Escape up to speed.

I didn't move from an Edge but did move from an Audi Q5 that was loaded. I don't miss any of the features (what the hay, I can turn my wipers on when it's starts raining). I can say the Audi rode better and was quieter, but not enough to warrant the cost.

That's what I'm heavily trying to consider here.

My EDGE is an SEL with the "cold weather" package. But it's also a 2020, so not as up to date as anything new. A few changes I'm aware of:

1) No leather unless I go Lariat or aftermarket. Do I prefer leather? Yes. But its not a dealbreaker.
2) Rain sensing wipers. To be honest, they get frustrating on the Edge and I'm operating them manually most the time anyways.
3) Dual zone climate control- Not sure how to operate this on the Edge honestly. I bought it, set the temp to 68 and have only touched on/off/defrost since then.
4) Ride comfort - When I bought the Edge it was better than it is now. But I've treated it as a truck too much, and the ride is getting floppy.
5) Seat comfort? - This was my big question, that seems to be partially answered above.
6) Foot motion operated hatch - I hate this thing so much. It can go away...

I would gain wireless Android Auto, as well as additional drive modes for towing.

Ok, now I'm wondering- because the wording is so weird:

On the XLT, I know it doesn't have "Dual zone climate control" but it does appear that you set the temperature on the screen.

I'm getting conflicting info on how that works. Ford is calling it "manual" but the temp control would indicate some sort of climate control, right?

Does it adjust fan speed and settings to get to your desired temperature, or are you forced to adjust fan speed separately?

Dual zone on a Maverick means you have a temp dial for the driver and one for the passenger. Not sure how this can be confusing. It is like this on the Lariat or higher. I had an XLT and it only had one temperature dial and I preferred having a dual system so the passenger can mix their own temperature (one side sunny and hot, the other in the shade and cooler).
In any case, neither system is a truly automatic system and I wouldn't want that anyway.
I prefer my Lariat for other features, but was able to survive the XLT luxury package which was less flexible.

It's not the dual zone that's confusing.

On the XLT, there is an "auto" button (I think).

Ford calls it "manual temperature control" which in my mind means you manually adjust fan speed and hot/cold like in old cars, which seems weird on a touch screen.

Trying to figure out how the XLT manual/auto setup actually functions.
