I worked at WD's and parts departments selling wholesale to independent repair shops for a large part of my automotive career.Sounds like you had the privelage of working for one of the good dealerships, but again unforutuantley they are not all good (just read all the posts of cancelled orders/renegotiating terms or out right stealing custumer orders/etc). And unlike warranty work where you can take it to another dealership if your unhappy or not treated right you have no recourse if by chance you ordered your vehicle from a shady /incompentent dealer.
Although I don't have personal experience with warranty work in the 3 previous fords owned (I would be upset to have any problems in 36k or less), I have read lots of horror stories on owner forums about dealers not taking care of customers. I have personally experienced higher repair rates at dealerships (All dealerships not just Ford) which is why I typically go to independent repair shops/DIY
Point being with the "new" way of buying (ordering) vehicles I don't see the need of a dealership.
I would say that maybe 20% of the independents were good shops that had experienced, knowledgeable techs and honest owners. The rest not so good. Liked using the "parts cannon" approach to fixing cars which is a terrible way of doing repairs.
So I agree that independent's can be great. If you can find a good one.
