The hybrid should be great for towing. No mechanical clutch, regenerative braking and no hydraulic transmission. I do expect it to bog down on long uphills when the battery is depleted.
My experience is the opposite of that, but again my experience is in the 2nd worst hybrid ever made (HCH2)

Right. Towing expectations have changed in 20years. Back then, towing was slow & steady.

The old 4banger Ranger got <150hp and right about 150 lb-ft. The Tacoma i4 got a bit better hp & torque than the Ranger. The Hybrid's 2.5L power specs are a little better than the old 4bangers, but not by much.

Now, you'll hear guys proudly say: "I can't even feel anything back there!" and will PASS anyone on the highway going 70mph. The bar has been lifted. So folks need about 300 lb ft or more.

I plan on towing a pop-up camper (hard-sided). But I don't plan on passing folks, nor do I want to forget that I'm towing something.

Just a bit of history, the Ford 2.5L is a variant of the Mazda L5 engine. This engine family is very reliable. I have a 2005 Focus that uses a 2.0L in the same engine family, and it has over 315,000 miles on it. Bought the car in 2007 with 38,000 miles on it. No engine work - ever. Rock solid design.
I currently drive a 2016 Ford C-Max hybrid which has a Ford 2.0L hybrid engine. I have put 30K miles on the vehicle with no engine problems. The Maverick will replace the CMax. I love driving the CMax hybrid with its zippiness & 38-39 mpgs.

Perhaps I should be worried about driving a 2nd year hybrid truck, but I’m not. One, Ford has been making trucks for over 100 years and knows how to build a good truck, and two, I have been very satisfied with the the hybrid technology in the CMax, which seems pretty similar to that of the Maverick. I hope I’m not wrong.
