An idea for a FITS thingy. Take a look at the picture below

Ford Maverick FITS to be tried? FITS-idea

and imagine it as all one 3-D printed piece, still attachable by two tabs to the headrest posts but without the U-shaped hooks, rather with a panel which hangs against the back seat with a FITS slot (may or may not require a small bumper as part of the printing on the lower portion of the panel's rear). To avoid sharp corners the panel with the FITS slot could mimic the shape of the Ford oval.

I'll take a crack at this today - tablet holder for kids comes to mind immediately.

Yup. Tablet or iPad or phone holder, or clothes hanger or file bin large enough to carry 8-1/2 by 11 pages, any of which can be swapped into the FITS slot all come to mind, just off the top o' the noggin.

That would be awesome to hold a tablet for my daughter on road trips! If I ever get my truck, that’ll be high on the list of things to get!

Looks good. The cup holder might need a bottom support so drinks don’t shake all over and spill.
I use it for blender bottles and they friction fit against the sides. It's just an example for fitment since it was the only other thing in the back seat.

Lookin' good as a prototype. 👍
Thanks man - I'm gonna mark this as effectively done on my end - it's modular, multi function, yada yada. If I was to add anything it would just be screw holes so you don't have to tap your own (or make end caps)

I'd like one that has a ram mount ball adapter. That would be super dope.

I wonder what software / hardware configuration y'all are using for FITS accessories?

I'm a total newbie. And super stingy. But I see a free app "FreeCad" that is supposed to allow 3D files to be imported, traded, and printed.
And our good friends at Amazon have "printers" starting under $200.

Is such low end beginner level stuff worth anything at all? How frustrating would it be to do, for instance, tiny shelves in the dash cubby?

I use tinkercad, which is free in your web browser. I bought an ender 3 from Amazon for $150ish a few years. I printed out and purchased several upgrade parts (auto bed leveler, new bed springs, Bowden tube upgrade) along with octopi. It was certainly fiddly to get set up working the way I wanted.

With ender printers, you will have trial and error for sure. But once cry once - I would have just bought a prusa printer knowing what I know now.

I have a Prusa MK3S printer, and Creo is the CAD software I have access to through work. It is definitely not cheap.

TinkerCAD is a free option that has already been mentioned. I believe there is also a free version of Fusion360 available to hobbyists.

I would check your local library to see if they have a 3D printer before buying one of your own. Hobbyist grade 3D printers are not what I would consider plug and play.
