I finally got around to writing up my first long-ish drive in my new Maverick. 2023, AWD, CO/BAP. The trip was back in April, still plenty of snow on the ground.
Long Story Short: Loved it.
From the Bay Area up to Lake Tahoe, my drive is about 240-ish miles each way. In my previous car (2006 Honda Element) I could make it up there in one tank, but I had a range limit of a bit under 300 miles (more when heading back downhill, of course). The first thing I loved about this trip was the mileage. Computer said 28+ miles per gallon on the way up. On the way back it was 30.
The ride was smooth, but not whisper quiet -- some road noise. I'm ok with that, as my expecations were met. By comparison, the Element was a much rougher ride, but even after 17 years and 120K miles, it was about the same amount of road noise.
This was my first long drive in the Maverick, and also my first long drive with an auto transmission in nearly 30 years. I... didn't miss the manual trans, to be honest. Even in the mountains, the Maveric had plenty of pep.
At this point, I want to talk about naming a vehicle. I never named any of my cars. They were always "the <vehicle>". The Skylark. The Barracuda. The Ranger. etc. My kids, however, named my Element "Nelly the Element" on the way up to Tahoe about 10 years ago, and so on the way up to Tahoe this time, I was thinking back to when they named the car. My kids are grown now, but I decided that if they asked, I would say I named it "Maveroni and Cheese" due to the color. Back to the trip report.
I got only a few looks from folks walking or driving past, and I saw only two other Mavericks during the trip.
Overall, the trip was fun, and the drive was fantastic. I'm very happy with the vehicle.
Thing I didn't like: Motor's "Sewing machine noise" <-- seriously, I read all of the reviews and thought it was silly to complain about it, but dang, the EcoBoost motor makes a lot of racket at idle. I keep the radio/sound system volume at 7 to drown it out.
Unexpected likes: Heated steering wheel, seat comfort. The heated seat and steering wheel were ridiculous luxuries that I mocked before, but I confess to really enjoying having them in my Maverick.
