First power transfer unit fluid change result / observation

Did my first power transfer unit (PTU) fluid change today with 11,500 miles on it and it definitely needed it! I put 30 ounces of new fluid in and it had about 20 ounces that came out. Was definitely low. Lots of debris on the drain plug magnet,, and in the fluid. The fluid was three different colors of brown and look like water with shavings in it. I am definitely glad I did it.

Do you think it was underfilled from the factory?

Did you do the RDU as well?

I did not do the RDU yet. According to the dealership you fill till it starts coming out the fill plug, there was no fluid on the plug at all. So yes I think it was low on the fluid from the factory.

The PTU is right by the exhaust and gets hot, I have heard others change the fluid every 10,000 to 20,000 miles. I’m old school and believe in changing fluids and oils more often than required. Worked on vehicles for 40 years seen the insides of motors and trans with recommend changes not good.

Good job. Bought my 2022 Lariat ecoboost this past February with 20k miles and within 2 weeks had all the fluids changed including the ptu and rdu, coolant, brake fluid, oil w/ full synthetic and tranny...Will be doing this every 60k...
