Okay...

This Maverick journey started a week ago with a trip to my local Mitsubishi dealer thinking we may buy a small roller skate with good fuel economy and low payments.

A test drive showed my wife and I the car was too small for our yearly trip to Florida.

On to the Ford store to see a Maverick.

We found a great sales guy ( we had a lot in common since I have 7 years in auto sales in my background).

We wanted an XL to keep the payments lower and we were satisfied with the base 100A package.

The test drive was good.

But we had a tuff time finding a truck with the correct color for my bride and at the right msrp.

The dealer we were at would not budge on sticker price... most dealers that we contacted on line were at sticker or offering small discount.

One Ford store had an XL AWD coming in two weeks... my wife was ready to buy.

Ok.

But they couldn't make a trade despite promising it would be easy.

When getting my financing in order at my local bank my loan officer suggested another dealer she had bought from before.

So we made the 55 mile trip to see an XLT that we saw on ford.com's locator service.

Well that truck was also two weeks out.

They had this XLT on the lot... my wife agreed to a test drive
... it was Cactus Grey that she wanted with AWD, off road package, etc.

More $$$ than we wanted to pay BUT they gave me invoice pricing on the truck!

We pick up the truck on Wednesday. It will take some help figuring out all the bells and whistles but they have one person that teaches the old bastards how this stuff works.

My history with Ford products goes back decades.

My Dad didn't have a car until I was 10 years old. He worked for the railroad and we traveled by train when we visited relatives in WI and IL.

My brother had financed a used '54 Customline sedan in '59 after he was forced to trade in his '55 Jaguar XK 140 because the $90.00 a month payments were too much for his budget. My Dad co-signed for the loans on each car and he wound up owning that '54 by default.

When I started working at a local gas station at age 14 I pumped gas and eventually got to work in the shop. My boss was a GM guy but we had a lot of customers that drove Fords.

Fast forward to 1969 and I was building a '55 Pontiac for dirt track racing. One of my friends, Ron, got out of the service and he and another guy went racing.

My Pontiac wasn't ready to race so we found a crashed '60 Starliner to fix and race. I owned the car and Ron owned the trailer.

That was my first Ford.

I raced until '87 and every car was a Ford except for one Mopar.

When I got into auto racing promoting in '83 I sponsored future NASCAR legend Mark Martin in his American Speed Association Thunderbirds.

My first new car was a '70 Mercury Cyclone GT. Over the years every new car, except for a '71 Toyota, was a Ford or Mercury.

After all... Mercurys were just Fords with lock washers!

So now my last ever new vehicle is a Ford.

Kinda makes sense.

Awesome story.
The first vehicle I remember riding in was my dad’s Ford Cortina MkI. He was a Ford guy from the start, when he married my mom, in England, they bought a brand new grey Anglia.

Fast forward a few years after retiring from the USAF we moved from Westover AFB back to his native Texas.

We had a sweet year old 64 Tempest two door which he traded the Cortina for about a year before leaving for the states. Another airman brought it with him and found it too big for everyday use and parking.

After arriving in San Antonio he needed a second car, it was a 53 Mainline two door. Later he replaced it with the coolest car/truck he ever had, a 65 Falcon Ranchero. The previous owner, a well known roundy round racer had replaced the 225 hp 289 with a 289 HIPO, I remember it being pretty quick.

My first vehicle was a 68 Ranchero with a 302. This was the start of many Fords and Mercurys I would own over the years.

I pretty much stopped watching NASCAR after my favorite driver retired, #6 Mark Martin. 😉 So frustrating he never won a Championship.

Besides my Maverick, I have a reg cab 2019 F-150 with a 5.0, kinda fitting considering my first ride.

I like that Cactus Grey with the black wheels...we just bought our ecoboost FX4...wife chose Azure Grey.

Really..I had no idea of what the FX4 package or Luxury package entailed when I bought the truck,,,(the only truck of four at the dealer's in "her color").

500 something miles now and it has been fun to drive...fairly peppy, smooth and 23.5 MPG....car play works smoothly for Nav...radio sounds like a 1970's Maverick...the unexpected 110 plug in the bed was a bonus...already used.

I forgot to mention Martin drove my dirt track IMCA modified at the then paved 1/5 mile 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, WI in 1985.

I was the GM/track announcer and Mark agreed to come up and drive my POS car.

When he got to the track he looked over the car and said we had a lot of work ahead of us. After a couple hours of spring changes and such he took a practice lap and broke the current late model stock track record..
with a 133,000 mile 351 Cleveland junkyard engine (which blew on the next lap!).

I haven't spoken to Mark since we saw each other at Alan Kulwicki's funeral wake. I always told Mark I was the worse car owner he ever drove for
..always got a good laugh from him.

Regarding those 289 Hipo engines we ran one in 1970 on the dirt tracks around Milwaukee. My buddy Louie, who drove the car, had the 2-3 shift linkage fail one night at Wilmot, WI's 1/4 mile. He wasn't going to stop for that little impairment so he ran the 25 lap feature in 1st gear!

We went from last to 4th passing more Chevys than we ever had before!

Back to Mark Martin..
He has a channel on YouTube where he talks about his racing career...check it out.

Cactus grey = best color!
I liked the terrain color but zero were available in our price range and the Boss wanted Cactus gray.

I had to make a call to one of the sales guys that worked real hard to find the right truck but the dealer couldn't make a trade.

I'm going to buy him lunch the next time I'm around.
