Ive got a copy of a CC authorization form (100 dollars on the dealer letterhead)some sort of enrollment status email forwarded to me. I've also got dozens of emails with the rep since 11/21/21 and call logs. I think the likely answer was stated above: It sucks, but any legal recourse is likely not going to go far/be worth it. Had I followed the forum more closely, I'd have known this was a possibility.
I live in Maryland and would like to know the name of the dealership who did this to you. Thanks.

Howdy all. I ordered an XLT Maverick in November. Checked in every few weeks to hear the latest delay, but finally got a call on Friday afternoon that my Truck had arrived. I let them know I was looking forward to coming in. Was emailed on Saturday asking when and told them I planned on coming in Sunday. Wasn't able to make it in due to family in town, but emailed Monday asking for the best time to swing by, and was told "they held it as long as they could" and it was sold. The cynic in me believes they just wanted to get the insane dealer markups that they would not receive from me. I am sure I could have been more communicative over the weekend, but not once did I indicate that I wasn't planning on coming in, and Friday to Monday is less than one business day. I waited 6 months. I'm disgusted.
IMO, the moral of this story is communication is key, and making timely firm appointments to complete the purchase transaction. It sucks you lost the opportunity to buy the truck, but it helps to understand there are 2 parties to these transactions and each has to hold up their end to make it work. From the dealer's perspective (no I am not a dealer or employee) weekends are prime time for sales. They notified you on Friday giving you all weekend to nail it down with them, but you didn't make an appointment. They contacted you again next day asking you WHEN you were coming in- and again you didn't confirm an appointment or show up Sunday like you said. Then sent a very casual email a day later. If I'm a salesperson, I would have gotten the feeling you weren't committed to buying the truck (happens all the time) and they moved on. Your later posts here makes clear it could have been handled better, and you will likely be able to find another 1 at some point.

Don't give up and good luck in your efforts.

It was Lindsay Ford in Wheaton (which is open Sundays). I was trying to determine the degree to which I was at fault (which seems to be at least some, maybe more) before putting them on blast. I'm waiting to hear back from the general manager (who I spoke to briefly/sounded like a reasonable person).

Pre-ordering or ordering "from Ford" is not a thing. You order from a dealer. The dealer orders from Ford.

That's why I was confused, but I didnt know if there was an alternate path to order through ford and it ships to a local dealer. But what I did was a lot of back and forth with a sales rep, we settled on a build (which I believe i did through the ford website). I had to make one change because spray in liner was not available at the time. I then put in a CC deposit/hold, and got forwarded an email from ford to my dealer that I was enrolled in the program.

Yes, I meant was this ordered and not a Maverick that someone backed out on. Did you have an email from ford that said "your new Maverick is being built for you" along with the VIN etc...
If so, I think you should raise hell with Ford about that dealer. That truck was a "Special Order" for you! It should be up to you to tell the dealer that you refuse the truck, not the other way around.

Am I wrong here?

Yes, that other poster was confused (or just had terms mixed up). There is no path to directly order from Ford (but I can understand confusion on this because you have the build and price option online).

Sounds like you did everything right. Dealer just wasn't patient enough. You had to wait for months. They should have at least given you a week or two!

Ah, sorry. Yeah, this was ordered specifically for me.

That makes more sense!

Yes, it should have been saved by the dealer for him. But if it is sold, there is nothing that Ford can do.

Ford has increased the % of retail orders ("special orders" or "custom orders") that must be sold to the customer who ordered them. If the dealer falls below this % they are penalized with loss allocation. Repeat offenders get more penalties.

This will catch up to the dealers eventually....but unfortunately, it won't help customers who lost their orders.

I have to disagree. The dealers will get off scot-free. Threatening allocations only works as long as supply is constrained. At some point supply will open up and Ford will be throwing more vehicles at these dealers than they know what to do with - regardless of past transgressions.

I hate to say it, but that is BS that the dealer sold it! You really need to let Ford know about this. The dealer I bought mine from had 4 Mavericks come in. I picked mine up 3 days after it's arrival and 2 of the other 4 were still waiting for their new owners.

Bad Bad Dealer.

So are you forgetting the recorded line that you said what if I don't want it? They put it up for sale on Monday after you didn't pick it up on Sunday. It sold in minutes on Monday. You should of called on Sunday to let them know you wouldn't be in. Not there fault

I'm going to consider this case closed. The dealer likely should have waited longer than they did, but I did not help matters by not understanding how tenuous my hold was. I can/will let others know my experience and they can determine for themselves if they want to do business with Lindsay Ford. An unfortunate reality, but a reality nonetheless. Thanks everyone.
