Two weeks after I ordered my Maverick (Oct. 15th), my car was totaled. I was planning to just drive that car until the truck arrived (I was told it would be 4-6 months). So like you, I was without a car. And after looking at rental car rates, to rent a car for 4 months was well over 5 grand. And if it ran longer than 4 months, well, the cost would be prohibitive. It doesn’t make sense to me either but I’m scrambling here. I need a car sooner rather than later and if I’m looking at Q4 that’s a problem for me.
So I figured I would try to find a used car that I might be able to buy to drive until the truck arrives, the would sell the car. Couldn't find anything reasonable on Craigslist or other sites as everyone is jacking up their prices on cars due to the overall shortage of inventories. Then I stopped at a local dealer and asked them if they had any used cars they had taken in on trade, and were planning to just sell it to a wholesaler. They did. It was a 2007 Camry (stick shift). Had a Kelly Blue book retail price of $6.5k and a trade value of $4.5k. The battery seemed a little weak, so I offered them $4k, as is. They accepted.
So basically, instead of renting a car for 4-6 months (money out the window), I bought this one, and will sell for $5-$6k. Actually will make a few dollars on it.
Long story, but I share this as you may want to contact your various local car dealerships and ask them if they have any "as is" trade-ins that you can take a look at. These cars are normally not listed on their inventory lists for their salespeople as the dealership just plans to sell them to a car wholesaler. Good luck.
