Yup I am amazed every time I open this app, only in America.
To be fair the cubby is a bad design. Ford will probably get rid of it in the next version. And the people here ‘complaining’ should take credit for that.

The most obvious reason in terms of why something in a Ford vehicle looks like a filler (blank plate, a slot that can hold a credit/ID card near your drive mode selector buttons, this open space)? There was supposed to be something there, generally in a higher end variant, that yours doesn't have.

So, the most obvious explanation is a larger screen. Just so happens that this platform has a larger (specifically wider) screen option, coming to Escape for 2023 and even showing up last year on Focus in Europe and elsewhere. Maverick is begging for someone (Ford or DIY) to do the same.

That top one is hideous and way too distracting for my tastes

I made a nice divider and store my parking pass in there. Nobody ever asks what it's for, and I found it handy for that. My phone stays plugged in and in the console tray. Any interactions I need through it, I get off the steering wheel buttons or touch screen.

I dont have big screen envy. What ford put in this truck screenwise and information wise is actually plenty for me. I normally roll old skool, so this is a huge step up for me. I ordered ice blue LEDs and plan to drill a hole in the top of the cubby, and wire one in facing down to give a little ambient light to it.

I keep the infotainment screen turned off most of the time. And my rectangular garage door opener fits nicely in the cubby.

No complaints with the design and very glad to be able to turn the screen off.

I use my cubby up top to house my tree air freshener. No one has asked me what is for, I guess since it is being used. I like the idea of a camera mount up there though. Seems like you could just attach a ram mount in the existing tray rather than come up with a whole new piece though.
I used a product called Rubigrid (Amazon). I removed the storage area and drilled and bolted the product to the plastic, then installed a RAM ball and and arm, with a double ball and attached my dash cam. I didn't want things sticking to the windshield.

Here is my cubby, filled it in with a blank DIY switch from Etsy . Mounted my FENIEX switch to it and mounted a GPS and mag charger to the top insert. Those are on shock mounts with 1” ball arms

On my own I could probably ignore it, however I cannot tolerate everyone else who gets into my Maverick making stupid comments about it like, what's this? what's it for? why is it there? why does it look like that? why did they make it like this? why why why why why ect.
Oh, you were planning on having passengers?!?!

All kidding aside, good luck with the mod! I just added the cubby grid with phone mount.
