It is possible. I have a chip key (no fob) that will open the door and start the truck. A competent locksmith can cut the key for you. You program it yourself, if you have the two original fob keys.
See BOB225DUSTER's post above.

In your search for a smaller key, be aware that the Maverick uses a "center-mill" key and not a "side mill" key. The blade dimensions are the same (5.5 mm Wide, 3 mm Thick, 6.5 mm Shoulder) BUT the shape of the tip is NOT. The center mill keys have a squared-off blunt tip while the side mill keys have a chisel taper on the thickness at the very tip. A side mill key can tend to jam the pins if cut for a center-mill lock because the taper tends to push them sideways.
The part number for the full remote fob (3-Btn Center-Mill Flip Key; 315 MHZ; L,U,P) is Ford #164-R8269 or StratTec #5939651. Ford's #164-R8130 (StratTec #5923667 or Dorman 99294ST) is a SIDE-mill key and not the correct part. I don't have the part number for a transponder-only key (no remote). I had good support from NorthCoastKeyless.com. It took me a while to find a local locksmith willing to update the software in this equipment to handle my center-mill key, but that was a couple years back. I programmed it myself into the truck but needed both OEM keys for that procedure.
