Calendar Year vs. Model Year

So I entered a 2023 Hybrid order as soon as the order banks opened. I read all the messages saying these orders may not be delivered during Model Year (MY) 2023. What does that mean in terms of Calendar Year (CY)? I had always thought the MY was a flexible value, that was usually on or between August and October. But now I question my understanding. I'm just wondering if we're talking 2024 CY deliveries of the hybrids or mid to late 2023 CY deliveries.

If I Ford can't give a solid delivery date before July 2024, I'll be getting a Toyota Sienna hybrid and selling the Maverick if it ever arrives. I'm thinking I should have bought a Sienna already.

The model year refresh was derived by GM back in the 1920s as a way to plan obsolescence in vehicles. It also allows consumers to determine who has an "old car" and who has a new one. In terms of manufacturing, the only requirement is a VIN cannot be issued for a model year until after January 2 the year before. So, Ford could in theory make MY23 Mavericks starting January 2, 2022 and do so throughout the rest of 2022 and 2023, making for a nearly two year run on a single model year.

I haven't found a limitation on when a model year ends, but marketing rules tell me it ends as soon as a new styling you can charge more for is ready to be produced. No manufacturer is going to build a MY22 vehicle in 2023 as it would already be perceived as out of date even if the the only change to MY23 is literally just ticking up the model year.

I ordered my 2022 almost 11 months ago. Currently scheduled to be built in November. It won’t arrive at my dealer until 2023. I’m disappointed it will be “old” already but I definitely didn’t want to wait in line all over again.
