It ain't the "openness" of the wheel, it's the moisture and salt from the environment. Even the OEM wheels don't prevent sand and spray from hitting the rotors. If you drive along the surf line be sure to stop at a self-service car wash when done and spray the wheels and undercarriage down reall well - actually the whole truck!

Good advice if one can drive on the beach

Vehicles on beach in my area is verboten. I don't think anywhere in Brevard County vehicles can use the beach.
