Picture looks like an F-150 to me.

Sucks what happened to the guy though.

Yea f150.

WCGW building a home in bear country?

As someone who lives in bear country, there is no such thing as "unprovoked". You exist on their territory. That is it and that's enough. For a black bear to attack... The whole "unprovoked" thing is even more sus.

Sucks what happened, but there are good reasons to stay vigilant out there - AT. ALL. TIMES. I've had encounters with black bears and they are usually scared then run. Sounds like this one was hungry or frightened enough to attack and this guy wasn't prepared for the life he chose.

I used to live in the Smoky Mountains - right on the park border. Black bears were everywhere, and tourists were absolute idiots when they spotted them. Signs are everywhere warning people that the bears are wild animals, and can be very dangerous - especially a mother with cubs. There are warning signs stating that is it illegal to feed or approach the bears.

I watched a woman who was "old enough to know better" actually right walk up to a mamma bear and her two cubs - about 5 feet from the cubs - holding out a "treat" for one of the cubs. Of course, mamma bear didn't like that, and intervened. The lady was EXTREMELY lucky that all mamma bear did was mock-charge at her to drive her away.

As the park ranger was arresting her, the woman said "But they look so cute and cuddly! How can they be dangerous?" The ranger patiently explained that if the bear had actually attacked her, the woman could have been killed before the ranger could have intervened to kill the bear. He said the real tragedy was that the mamma bear was just a wild animal protecting her cubs from an idiot tourist. From his perspective, those cubs being orphaned would have been a huge tragedy. (Implied, but not stated: the woman's "death by stupidity" would have been a lesser tragedy, from his viewpoint. Can't say I disagree...)

We love driving and hiking around Cade's Cove but we're also well aware that we're visitors to their territory and keep our distance. When looking for bears to take pictures of you need a dedicated camera. If you're using you're phone then you're getting to close. Unless you have one of the magnifiers of course.

I recently went to a talk at the local library on “journeys into the woods.”
I immediately realized I was surrounded by tree huggers.
The speaker started off: “The first thing you need to know when going into the wild is that the wood’s primarily attempt is to kill you and eat you”
The crowd literally gasped.
Ha!

First thing they taught us in the Navy was that the ocean may look pretty, but it will kill you as soon as you give it a chance.

IRT bears: they’re 50% cute, 50% tear you to shreds

The sea is beautiful - and can be extremely dangerous... But as someone once said "Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity, or neglect."

My old instructor added this: "And the bastard conspires with the earth fire, and wind to kill the hell out of you, if you let it."

Bears, on the other hand, ARE inherently dangerous, and are best appreciated from a distance! Want close ups? Use binoculars or a telephoto lens...
