My CRZ hybrid used the electric drive motor as the starter with a standard starter for really cold weather. I think the regular starter came on twice in the 250k before I wrecked it. Was very smooth and silent. I think it would be hard on a standard starter.Supposedly it is not a typical starter, and it is designed to handle it.
But I’m with you, I don’t need that wearing out. I also don’t like the idea of it running of the battery each time it stops either.
