Will the 2.5 Hybrid be able to handle the weight + tools? This looks like a sweet setup for guys that don't need a full service van. Any thoughts on what the MPGs would be with this bulk on the back + a ladder on the rack?

Payload for the Hybrids are on the higher side aren't they? I assume 1,400lbs+ (the heaviest are FX4 ecoboost with the metal skid plates and AWD system; my payload is just over 1,300lbs).

It shouldn't have any problem with it.

My XLT hybrid has a payload capacity of 1560lbs.

Say 200lbs for a dude, 300ish lbs for the cap leaves you with about 1k lbs for tools and equipment. Not sure I would want to drive around at the max capacity of the truck though. Maybe keep 800 lbs for tools and equipment? That way you can take a passenger along, if you need to, without going over the rated payload capacity.

Payload is fine, still haul 1000lbs easy. But MPG will suffer especially with the rack. I think for just a ladder that rack is overkill. I would, if I were doing the hybrid thing. Get the thinnest rails I can for the cap and just keep a couple boards in the bed for crossbars. As long as you have good anchor points up there it will be fine for most loads. Then the MPG wont be hit much by wind resistance, just the weight. If you were getting 40mpg, I think the weight would bring you down to low to mid 30s?
