I have noticed the same with a Ford Explorer hybrid from work as well.

I usually smell it on hot days after it's been ran. I'll remote start it as I'm walking up after leaving a store so I'm sure it's not trying to warm itself up.

Ammonia is smelling salts.
Ammonia is like having Wasabi up your nose.

Are you sure that is what you are smelling? Or are you smelling gasoline?
