You are correct that in Auto mode the AC and fan speed lights do not operate to indicate status. My Maverick has the Dual Automatic Temperature Control (DATC) system. I have never 'intentionally' placed it in Auto mode even once since new and if you had asked me if there was an auto mode I would have said no. The truck appears to remember the last HVAC settings on restart, with the exception that it will occasionally switch the AC on when it was left off (I have probably used the AC less than a dozen times in 18 months.) Yes, I had manually selected vent and fan speed functions just prior to this event. Could I have unintentionally hit the auto mode as the last action? I don't thinks so, however it was pouring rain and the distraction level was high and it would be the most logical explanation for the observed behavior (i.e., cold air flowing with A/C light off). Thanks for the feedback.
The fan on my XLT hybrid is always on as soon as I turn the key.

I've never had it come on while the system power button was off.

But yes I have had it go from fan only to air conditioning if the fan was on any setting other than off.

Also AC lights do not come on if the truck is doing it.
My XLT hybrid has no off setting on the fan. It always blows on low till I turn the speed up.

The fan is always on the low speed unless you turn it up faster. I really don't like this. You don't always need a fan to be on.
Consider that the fan has to be on to check the humidity levels to determine whether or not the defroster (AC) needs to be turned on to keep condensate from forming. Also other things like evening out temp within cabin as it's possible with sunlight or whatever creating 10+ degree variation from eye level to foot level. I find that lack of air movement creates a "stuffiness" feeling due to warmer air and possibly also reduced oxygen reduction and carbon dioxide buildup due to my breathing. Keeps from having to open door window.

In my XL, I never use auto because it never knows really what to do. Auto is turned off. I turn the blower off by pressing the temperature knob.
Fan doesn't run and AC doesn't come on willy-nilly.
