I had the factory passenger side cubby, but when I went to enclose the wide open drivers-side fender well underneath with corrugated black plastic and zip ties I noticed how much space was in there. It even had a metal "shelf" for the trash can to sit on, so I just had to find a trash can that had correct dimensions. Of course the Mav came with the large bolted-on cover on the driver's side from the factory, so I just needed some M6 thumb screws for the top 2 holes, you can do all 4 screws if you want, or use factory bolts and keep a socket wrench handy. I notched out the front of the can to the size of the hole, but you can do whatever, I might try inverting a second can on top to enclose it from the top and notch out the opening. I did this at the end of 2024, and so far it has been great, but even though I closed off the underside with some plastic panels and have a plastic panel under my mud flap, it does get a little dusty dirt in there so maybe just store things that can get a little dirty. Also you might drill a few holes in the can so you can wash it out and have it drain.

M6 x 15mm thumb screws, you might be fine with 10mm screw length too.
