Hey truck club.
i dont come by here all that much anymore. but I ve been wanting to give you all a longer term review since I've now owned my maverick in both living situations I believe it was designed for. so here goes:
TLDR:
Ordered my 2022 XLT 4K in Jan 2022. picked up early spring. For the first 1.5 years of ownership I used my maverick for work as a contracted millwright. So hauling my personal tools every day, some materials, and occassionally a work trailer/large welder etc. for the last 6 months since getting a job at a facility that doesn't require me to bring tools around with me anywhere, my maverick is simply a commuter vehicle that i use for pulling a small trailer for camping, DIY projects, etc. I'll review both below:
Maverick as a work vehicle:
The Maverick held up admirably to my usage. Daily load in the box was probably 2-300 pounds of tools. It handled the weight fine. Accelleration and braking performance relatively unaffected. It also hauls the work trialers just fine, though I wouldn't suggest doing so regularly. I dont think it would be kind to the 2L turbo. The box is a tad small for working out of. I always wished it was even just 6" longer and that there was an extra few inches of wall height so that you can fit a bit more under the tonneau. For anyone who transports long materials or even medium length regularly... this is not the work trucklette for you. though likely, that trucklette doesn't exist. I expect the box sizes to remain this size on the unibodied versions that release... unless you want to pay much more... since youd be out of the bronco sport/escape size of small-mid sized suv and into the explorer+ size. At which point youre probably in the same price range as the ranger... so I digress, the Maverick does impressively well as a work vehicle, depending on your specific needs. I was getting rougly 29mpg with this usage. If i didn't live in canada and have to have snow tires and remote starting for 6 months of the year... that would have been closer to 31 I estimate.
Maverick as a commuter:
I think overall this is what the Maverick was intended for honestly. It really does much better unloaded now that I've been doing this a while. That doesn't take away from what I said earlier about it being good for working, depending on your needs. But it feels more comfortable in this 45 minutes of country driving, unloaded, twice a day. I get 31 mpg doing this drive... and again... without snow and winter, would be 33.
The bad:
As much as i love my maverick... there's some little stuff that always bugs me. not enough to trade it in... just enough to let out the occassional: Come on ford, kinda phrase. The design, ergonomics, overall performance, and so far i'd say the mechanical elements of the vehicle are all great so far. Its the little details that ford misses on the Mav... and from what I've seen thats kinda just par for the course with Ford vehicles. here's some examples:
-I'm not certain why they bother with the 0.5 degrees of adjustment on the temp knob. The maverick provides the following temperatures from its vents: Hot, lukewarm, cool. lol there are no in betweens. In canada the display reads from like 16 degrees to 27 or something. from 27 down to around 20.5 the air comes out hot. from 18-20... lukewarm... and below that its cool lol this isn't my first temperature read out vehicle... so i know this isn't normal. its just poor craftsmanship. My dual zone kia takes this maverick to church when it comes to interior fit and finish... which is another car I love... but i mean... its just a kia lol
-The infotainment system sucks. thank gosh it has apple carplay otherwise I would honestly consider trading this thing in based on how annoying the system works otherwise... even with carplay... the system crashes and has to reboot at least once a month lol and when i wasn't using carplay for every drive the blutooth would drop out ... twice a week? Once every 4 phone calls or so it'll just decide not to connect the audio. The whole systems sucks lol so my advice, should you care, is just plug your phone in to carplay every time... and itll... mostly be ok lol
-The windshield wipers kinda suck... and they cant be propped up lol the hood is in the way lol so you cant pull them up fully to clean them off after an ice storm or prop them up for changing the blades. pretty minor inconvenience... but still stupid
-The motors on the windows are super weak. Which doesn't often matter... but it means they go up and down super slow and more importantly... when your window gets ice on the weatherstripping the motors trip out and cant drop the window lol
-Last thing is that the heating and leather packages that come standard on many vehicles now... or at least in mid trim models, are locked away on the top trims of the maverick.. and all fords really. this is super annoying. I ended up just getting a katzkin package so it all worked out... but cmon ford.
Overall:
I love my maverick. its perfect for me. That being said... I feel there's better options for many people. The maverick is perfect for someone who needs a commuter vehicle with versatility for occassional trailer hauls, or to throw something in the back every now and then for projects or picking up marketplace items for the kids lol thats me... thats what i need... but if you need just a work vehicle... like one you actually work out of, or just a commuter vehicle, this might not be for you. you could get a civic or corolla and get a really polished commuter... or if sedans are too low or small you can get a kia seltos sized vehicle, also for the same price and not have to deal with Ford's insistance on locking comfort items like heating and leather packages in top trims and luxury packages.
As an aside, the maverick is rediculously fun for the price to drive in the snow or dirt or mild off road type scenarios. I dunno why they blessed this thing with the all wheel drive system it has instead of giving it a decent interior and infotainment package but i'm here for it lol the 2L is the perfect amount of power for this little thing to feel quick but not be too bad on the wallet at the pump.
