OP, I think the vents look great and to your point, while it is minimal there is *some* measurable benefit to installing them.

The purpose of heat extraction vents are to minimize heat soak. OP states he lives in the desert too. Not totally cosmetic. Under hood temps will be lowered by a few degrees. Something like a 20 or 30 F difference would be a stretch, but could it be 5 F or so? Absolutely.

Did they say how much metal was in the rear diff fluid or show you? It is normal to see some shavings or "glitter", but if there were actual chunks then that's a different story.

Those vents should be able to lower your under-hood temps a bit! Looks nice!

Yes, to second @MavStangVa my factory SIBL does not cover that top rail either.

You, not the shop guy, have hit the nail on the head. No SIBL along that top edge. You need the smooth surface for the front seal of the tonneau to seal properly.
