The purpose of heat extraction vents are to minimize heat soak. OP states he lives in the desert too.
Not totally cosmetic. Under hood temps will be lowered by a few degrees. Something like a 20 or 30 F difference would be a stretch, but could it be 5 F or so? Absolutely.
Did they say how much metal was in the rear diff fluid or show you? It is normal to see some shavings or "glitter", but if there were actual chunks then that's a different story.
You, not the shop guy, have hit the nail on the head. No SIBL along that top edge. You need the smooth surface for the front seal of the tonneau to seal properly.

Yes, that is a good idea! It's kind of like a budget Quickjack (which I would love to get a set someday). I side-jack my Corvette all the time, which I why I figured I'd give it a try on the Maverick too.
I follow the marked jacking points on the pinch welds.
One time I did side-jack it though, where I placed the jack at the midpoint of the pinch weld. It worked, and I didn't damage the pinch. I wouldn't personally recommend this though as it is a little risky. I was just experimenting to see...
