Yeah that is really unusual and super cool. I had a Mercury Montego in high school and repainted it for prom - I'm not sure the paint wasn't just a little bit wet when I went to pick up my date hahahaha I remember I used DuPont's centauri enamel single stage.
A repair like that can go south in a hurry. Usually the surface is only small evidence of the body cancer below on older vehicles. Said most owners - " I didnt want to spend THAT much" ........ LOL
Well on the 2023 that I JUST REMOVED the quarter panel there was NO spot welds - possibly earlier production did however there was zero on this truck. Even in the factory manual it showed some welds - none of the welds were where it wouldn't be covered by trim or bumper cover tho.
Man that's a good question. From doing Jeep restorations for 40 years I'm fairly familiar with frame rust and undercoating rust. Most of the damage done is from the salt being able to just stay on the frame indefinitely. If after a good snow or a few snows where they've salted you wash it down...
As a side note - From Bruce W 's question, I wondered about the coating. There was a video about the Hermosillo plant and assembly - it shows some of the painting process however the system made by Durr actually coats the entire vehicle with a phosphate primer coating by dunking the whole...
It looked just like the exposed metal under the quarter panel. Both are coated in I assume zinc based / anti corrosion primer. Evidently it works pretty well as there isnt any evidence of rust anywhere underneath. Ill add a shot in the video for you of the back of the fender :)
I hear ya however not being able to assemble a truck because of waiting for 6 specialty clips and trying to order the right ones when it takes less than 2 minutes to pull them - yeah they pull the old ones. Sadly they also charged for the new ones probably at $22.00 each - the same fasteners...
The other comment that I would make is all these trucks that are hit in the rear and totaled - Many could be repaired but the body shop estimates are through the roof. For example - All the small fasteners I removed from the damage quarter panel I'm reusing but a body shop would quote replacing...
Unfortunately they don't come painted so yeah putting a new one on is not that bad however I still have to paint it lol The price of a rear quarter panel will range from 700 to $800 depending on which dealer you go to and your relationship with them.
Working on Mavie 2 today - another employee wreck. Video coming soon. I can verify that it is 100% bolt on and no spot welds. Hey I'm going glass half full lol. Thought everyone would enjoy seeing the skeleton on the rear of the Maverick. My warped mind also thought it wouldn't be that hard to...
