You could just splice into the tail light's brake positive and use whatever ground. Having something plugged into your trailer connector disables certain features.

I did the same thing and still am having better saver issues if it sits for over a day. Going to the dealer on Thursday for the accm and abs module updates and trailer recall software.
Zap also ruined the water seal on one of my tail lights so do with that info what you will.
