I ZEP'd my third brake light. It's the same procedure as the tail lights. It makes a small difference. It's noticeable, but not nearly as striking as the tail lights. I was going to tint, but went with this to match the tail lights.

The headlights are sealed. It's possible to open them, and there's some room in the housing possibly to add some lighting (speaking only for the XLT, have not seen the Lariat).

You can do the ZEP method on a regular Maverick tail light. If you do this, you will have to ZEP your BAP'ed headlight as they will look different. Despite it being a Black Appearance Package, there is a bit of chrome in the BAP tail light.
