I have had a few trucks over the years, never had a tonneau cover as I didn't have the money at the time.

I am considering getting one for my Maverick, for a combination of looks and keeping my stuff dry if it happens to rain on me while I have gear in the bed.

Yes, I could (and likely will) watch YouTube and read reviews, but I also figured I'd ask you folks what you thought about tonneau covers.

Do you use one? Does it keep your cargo dry? Does having one effect your fuel economy? Do you prefer soft, hard folding, or hard roll up?

Yeah, that's a lot of questions.

I'm not planning on using one as more than a visual theft deterrent, as I don't plan to leave anything of value in the bed unattended.

I may not even need one, but if nothing else they look nice and the soft ones at least are pretty cheap aftermarket.

I will be getting one. They do keep your stuff dry but be prepared for leaks. There are a lot of edges to seal. More expensive setups properly installed should seal better but with stuff like this proper installation is key. I want a hard roll up for better security and because rollups don't block the rear window as much as trifolds.

IIRC mythbusters did a test and found that the cover did not significantly affect mileage.

I’ve had soft covers in the past, not big on them for several reasons.
This time around I’m trying a tri-fold.
From the ones I’ve seen they will keep your stuff drier, but not always dry.

Same reasons, Tri-fold for me and several Tri-fold models are easy to take off. I could not deal with the hard roll up due to blocking the rear window when rolled up. There are several Tri-Fold makes available in the $320 range. The thin role-ups are just too easy to penetrate with a pocket knife. I tend to get hit with thieves when I'm least expecting it.

I too am not worried about someone breaking in. It'll be in the garage most nights. For the few nights where it's outside when we travel, I'm guessing most of the time, we'll empty it. If we do leave stuff in it overnight in a hotel parking lot, the fact that you can't see inside should bring the risk down to next to nothing.

So, I'm going with a soft roll-up primarily because they are 1/4-1/2 as expensive as hard rollups and 1/5-1/3 as expensive as retracting ones.

I didn't consider a trifold because of the back window blocking when up. I also like that the soft rollups take up less of the back window than hard rollups which isn't an issue with bigger trucks but I suspect will be a bigger deal with this truck... although the shorter bed should mean a smaller rollup so not sure if this should even be a consideration.

The other thing I like about soft rollups is that you can add a bed rack mounting outside of where the tonneau lays. If you get a hard rollup with a locking function, you have to get one with a t-track if you want to add a rack. Not sure if I will need a rack but I don't want to have to replace a $1000 tonneau if I do.

I have decided to get a tonneau cover for sure. Just figuring out what to get now.

I've pretty much narrowed it down to a truxedo truxsport soft roll up or a hard trifold that I haven't found yet.

Not wanting to spend a grand when the soft roll up can be had for about $300.

If I can find a decent quality trifold for under $500 I may go that route.

Purchased a hard rolling cover today from Fairway. I like having that extra security and cover for my things in the truck bed.

You can use the $210 (42k reward points) to help with this big ticket item.

Actually I just found a soft trifold by gator that seems like a good one. The accessories shopping is a serious rabbit hole to go down.

Not planning on doing much really. Weathertek floormats (either for Ford points or ordered online), The tonneau cover (ordered online most likely), and perhaps the letter decals for the tailgate (maybe from Ford if the quality justifies it, otherwise ordered online).

I'll probably think of more before it gets built next summer, lol.

I think I'm going to eventually get the gator cover as well. It's cheap and easy to install/remove and gives out of sight out of mind. I'm interested in seeing if softopper comes out with a model for the Maverick. I reached out but haven't had a response from them.

I ordered a Gator SFX Tri-Fold just this afternoon from RealTruck.com. Did the online chat and asked for best price and got $15 off, made the price $264 and free shipping. Estimated delivery is 2 weeks out. My Maverick is 2 months out so that's not a problem. LoL

Nice.

Please let me know what you think when you get it installed. I'm currently leaning that way myself.

Pretty sure I am going with the Hard tri-fold. I will not have much in the back worth anything, but have had friends get there tops slashed just to see what they were covering up. I will have signs back there most of the time and when going fishing, chairs and poles that I want out of site if we stop for breakfast. My brother-in-law got all his stuff stolen while in Denny's for breakfast. Also I'm planning on keeping this truck for a long time so think the investment is worth it.

For me its going to depend on a combination of price and features. I plan on having the truck for the rest of my life, at least till I retire in another 10 years.

A hard trifold would be my preference, but I am seeing them in the 1K range. Might need to do more shopping, but still pretty steep.

I'm looking at the Bak

https://realtruck.com/p/bakflip-g2-tonneau-cover/v/ford/maverick/2022/

or the Weathertech

https://www.weathertech.com/ford/2022/maverick/alloycover/

depending on price. Been posted here that you can get 20% off at Realtruck so will check both prices when my Mav is getting delivered. The Bak is the same as the dealer item and seen it on the ranger like the look.
