When you map in your destination, the app will typically give you 2 or 3 routes to choose from.
Google maps? Apple Maps? Waze? They should all have options for alternative routes. It won't allow you to change routes while you are driving typically, unless you use Siri.
Settings, maps, directions, driving and make sure avoid highways is not checked. I live in west Roseville and it takes me a different way almost every day. Watt is the most fucked up road!
I use WAZE and Apple Car Play with an iPhone. I've discovered, and I don't know if this is true or not, that if I start the WAZE app on my phone, punch in the destination on my phone (not on the car screen) I will generally get more than one routing option, and I choose the one that suits me best.
With google maps, if I go a different route than what it suggested, it usually just automatically re-routes me.
