Hello All,

I have a 2023 Maverick Tremor I purchased new in May. I've been very happy with the truck thus far and have a little over 11K on it. However, when the weather turned cold this past week, I got a check engine light and notification that the engine took too long to warm to operating temperature. It was about the mid 30s at the time, so nothing extreme in my opinion. I thought it must have been a fluke and reset the light. It came on again the next day in almost the exact same place on my drive to work. I'm waiting for an appointment for the dealer to take a look, but I've also found at least two others who have posted about this issue on mavericks, and several on other forums for other Fords with Ecoboost engines. In each case that I've found online, no one has stated a solution was found for the issue.

A few things I've noticed since the light came on: my gas mileage has gone from 24 MPG average to 23 MPG average in only a weeks time (obviously running less efficiently due to operating temp); the engine temp bars fluctuate between 2 and 4 bars, in some instances, less than a minute depending on driving conditions. If I"m pulling a hill it will spike to 4 and on the decent go back to two. Although I dont like getting less MPGs, that is less my concern. I've never driven a car that fluctuated in engine temp that dramatically. I have had vehicles in the past with defective thermostats either stuck wide open or failing to close all the way cause similar issues. However, one individual dealing with this issue on his maverick reported that the dealer changed the thermostat and it did not correct this issue. This leads me to believe something else is going on here.

Has anyone driving an ecoboost experienced this? If so, what were the solutions you were offered/worked to actually fix the problem? Its really bothering me that a new truck is having an issue like this. I've always driven beaters and this was supposed to be my "dont need to worry about it" vehicle to get me to and from work everyday for a few years. This is also my first Ford (always driven Toyotas), so I am also having some regret in changing my normal position that Toyotas are king of reliability. If anyone has any input they can share about this issue, I would appreciate it.

Brian

Temp sensor and thermostat would be obvious, not sure about shutters if you have them. Is coolant full?

Coolant is normal/full level. I dont believe there are shutters on this model. The guy on Reddit who had a similar issue just responded to me saying he sold the truck back to Ford because they had it for 45 days and had to replace all the ECU electronics. I'm hoping that is not the case here, but I've been nervous I cant find many positive solutions to this issue.

You used to see a lot of semis with cardboard over their radiators in winter. Might work while you're waiting for the dealer.

if your heater blows hot air it's prob a sensor
if your heater blows cold air it's the thermostat

Just wanted to provide an update. The dealer replaced the thermostat and I picked it up last night. Although the check engine light did not return during about 20 minutes of driving, the temp gauge only rose to two bars and moved back to only one bar momentarily during the drive. I believe it's inevitable the light will return given the engine is not warming up to temp and is still showing irregular fluctuation. I was driving at 70 mph, so it should have reached over more than 2 bars on the gauge in that length of drive. Ambient temp was 37, so not crazy low. Once the light comes on I'm going to take it in to avoid them telling me nothing is wrong. Hopefully this time they can give me a rental since they had none available, which left me carless for 3 days. It's a shame a brand new vehicle needs this type of service before the second oil change.

UPDATE: Dealer replaced the temperature sensor and the problem appears to be resolved. Ford covered a rental for the whole time the truck was being diagnosed and repaired. Although I'm still not thrilled to have a warranty claim this early in the process, they did take care of it on the second attempt. It ultimately was not as dire as some others warned elsewhere online.
