not having JIT could help weather short term disruptions but no one, NO ONES stockpiles could span the shortages we've seen these past two years.

Of course. But I also fault all manufacturers for not building chip plants here. Such a vital part, and nobody had the foresight to do so. You can’t have your whole industry dependent on one place for a vital part. New plants are being built in Arizona, but the big one being completed in a year or so, was still built by Taiwan. THEY had the foresight to make one here to protect from the Chinese. Ford and others say fat dumb and happy even when they saw the problem years ago.

Most manufacturers are not allowing stockpiling of materials. I have tried for my projects. Allocations are preventing just that. It's not about Just - in - time. It's about the resources needed in general. Ford has done plenty wrong. Probably should have done better for the ordering to match production. But Ford cannot prevent or plan around the resource scarcity.

I believe there are 2 going into Arizona, 2 into Ohio and a monster plant in New York.
Well over ten years back we, the USA, built about 40% of the worlds chips. Now it's at 12% even though we engineer the majority of them.

It is because of weak management, with no foresight beyond the next quarter p&l.

It proves that the Japanese are not the all knowing, infallible gods some have made them out to be. If production is important, and it should be paramount to car companies, a certain amount of stockpiling is necessary, especially high value parts. Never, in the 8 years I was at Chrysler, did we have a shut down because of lack of parts. Sure it wasn’t as cutesy and fashionable to stockpile, but it worked. My insurance agent has a customer with a Maverick needing a new grill. 8 months and the truck sits in the shop. No parts available. A stockpile should have been made by Ford.
The Toyota Production model / JIT allows for inventory. One of the tenants of the model is short supply chains > long supply chains. Of course, thats tempting to ignore when some overseas factory can sell a widget for 25 cents less and then I make my quarterly bonus. Also, many JIT shops are pretend JIT, simply pushing cost upstream to their supplier rather than fixing internal flows.

I spent 8 years working for Chrysler in supply. Going too diverse in an unstable world is not good management. Claiming that others are too stupid to “understand” is the height of unfounded arrogance
How does “going too diverse in an unstable world” fit with “Ford needs more suppliers than one for each item”?? Last quote may not be exact, but it’s close to what you said.

if you really hate Ford so much, go somewhere else man.

This is a question I've been having since I've been seeing people say "'22s will be built in '23". If Ford is already building 2023s this month, will they build both the '22 models and '23 models at the same time next year? What was the point of canceling the '22s with a VIN assigned and causing a whole fiasco if they're just gonna build '22s in Jan and Feb?
And March and April and…….

Suppliers in unstable places are not worth having. And I will do as I please. I hit a raw spot with so many Ford employees going haywire over the truth
