Just replaced my tires with something better and I noticed my spare is facing down, with the face of the rim and tire valve facing the ground. Is that how the spare comes from the factory? Would the mechanism still work if the wheel were facing the other way?

I don't care so much about my steel spare, but I was considering getting a matching rim for a 5 wheel rotation and would prefer the wheel face up to protect it from the road.

That's correct. It would be hard to check and fill with air if turned the other way.

It is face down in the maverick. I have had several other trucks where it was face up forcing me to drop it down once or twice a year to check the air pressure.

I learned the hard way that I should be checking the spare tire pressure. Got a flat at midnight coming home from the airport. Got the tire out to swap, and yep, flat as could be. Said F it, got an Uber. Dealt with it the next morning.

I've heard that is actually a good thing as it works the mechanism so it doesn't seize up.
