Camper Recommendation for Hybrid 2K towing?

Can anyone recommend a camper around 1500 lbs or less? Preferably sleeps 2-4 with bathroom.


My goal is to get a lightweight camper that sleeps 2+. Then add a rooftop tent for 2 people. And I’ll be sleeping in the truck backseat since I’m very short.

Will use the truck bed as a storage area with a soft tonneau cover.

Bathroom part is difficult. I have been hawking ALL brands of campers for awhile. I ordered a hybrid Maverick as well. I currently have a 8ft popup Skamp from the late 1980s and currently tow with my 2011 2.3l 5-speed reg cab Ranger, handles it fine - just sluggish. Im sure the Maverick will handle it even better. I havent weighed it, but I would guess around 1200-1300lbs. Everything I see with a bathroom is either 1500lbs or more, or costs $15K +. I might make a wet bath for inside the popup. It sleeps 4-5 easily, since it has basically 2 beds on each side that are just a bit smaller than a queen. If you find something let me know.

Lightest hard side campers with 1 bed and bath are like 1850lbs dry. Personally I’ll be converting a cargo trailer as a toy hauler/camper a 6x12sa is around 1200lbs I’ll likely only add a bed system and small kitchenette and a/c

a pop up is about all that would be light enough and low and easy to pull, have seen some nice used w/wet baths

IMHO, if you can afford the registration and/or taxes to keep the F150 and camper do so especially if you already own them. Never know when something might happen and you need the F150; camper is just a bonus. In my case my only back-up vehicle is a motorcycle (my primary car just died) and New England is not the place for riding yet.

I would recommend a tent pop up camper. Most of them will weigh less than 1500 pounds.

Also consider that 2000lbs of trailer only leaves you about 300lbs in the truck before exceeding gvwr

If you are a DIY person then a cargo trailer conversion is the clear deal. Designing mine now. Two brands to check out are Xpress and EZ Hauler, both are by the same parent company and are all aluminum; a 6x12 with 74” interior height is only 950 lbs.! Haven’t actually looked at them in person yet so I can’t vouch for quality.

I built a kinda sorta topper style box for my full size truck with an 8 foot box. My thought is that I am either going to adapt that to be put on a utility trailer or start over and do a tear drop trailer.

Also I have this crazy idea about making a pop up cab over topper type thing that can have a mattress somewhere and somehow in it, but I’m still juggling the viability of the idea with the limited space available and how unstable it might not be.

You could look at a Scamp 13' camper, but it only sleeps 2 if you get the bathroom. It could sleep 4 without the bathroom. You wouldn't want to put people in a tent on top of it.

Standard 13' is 1,300-1,500lbs and the Deluxe is 100lbs heavier.

This is one of the nicest you can get under 2,000 pounds from Rove Lite. https://travelliterv.com/rvs/2021-rove-lite-travel-trailers/ It has an aluminum frame, but keep in mind almost any non-popup trailer will probably exceed the "recommended" frontal area Ford states for the Hybrid model (20 sq/ft, not exactly sure how that's calculated. Above the bed? Including the truck?).

We have an older A-Liner (800lb dry). No bath, but it's the main reason we're getting this truck.
