1. Ford lied about it being a fullsize spare, on purpose, so they could juice sales of the $115 option. Easy margin.

2. The fullsize spare was supposed to be included in the Lariat Lux for Ecoboost builds (perhaps even XLT Lux). It was not. This cost me $300 in a steel wheel and tire, and time.

3. The difference in weight between a donut and a true full size spare isn't going to make a huge difference in MPG, but it sure will make a difference when one pops and you're towing/off-road, if that applies to you.
So by your reasoning, ford is saving people almost $200 by providing a full sized wheel an tire rather than a doughnut for the $115?

I have one of these in my truck. It is possible to fix a flat tire on the vehicle if the leak is obvious.
Tire plug repair kit.
I usually carry 1 of those too. The thing is you still need air to inflate the tire when you are done plugging. I usually do the plug option when I have noticed a nail or something in the tire with slow leak. That way I fix at home with a jack under it to relieve the weight before I remove the nail and start working on cleaning out the hole to prep for plugging, and can air up with my compressor.

i know , i know ... i'm adding to it, but why are people fretting about the spare tire.
i don't know, for me, i'd want the spare tire to be as light as practically possible because all it's doing is add weight to my truck and reducing fuel efficiency.
why would you want to lug along a full size tire and rim when you know the chances of you needing it is rare??

Traditionally, pickup trucks did not have compact spares primarily to accommodate a bed possibly filled to weight capacity.

Whether or not the spare is full-sized or compact, it may be a legitimate concern to some owners who haul at capacity. So no, lighter isn't always better in regards to trucks.

I actually have a self-plugged tire on the Maverick. Unfortunately, it happened early on, before the first rotation.
