I took a college course several years ago taught by a former MDOT engineer. He said to test out how well the highway was constructed compared to the design they would get a car aligned as perfectly as they could and then see how far they could go down the new highway with no hands on the wheel and at the design speed. Theoretically the car should steer itself around the curves if the superelevation was built correctly. Most of the time they got it right.Cars are usually aligned to track straight. If they're going to tend to the shoulder, that's because of the road crown.
