I mounted the Ford supplied spare tire after suffering a flat tire.
I drove the car home (1 mile) and immediately it felt as if the tire was dragging. Then when I turned the steering wheel a very loud sound came from almost below the driver seat..it was as if cables are under tension, straining. In addition, another sound erupted like loud thumps/knocking, this one felt like it came from the underseat storage compartment. I decided to put back the flat tire, inflated it and drove to the tire repair store. No sounds whatsoever. It was 100% related to the spare tire, but how?? thanks for your comments

Did you turn traction control off Small spare. Did you leave any of the under side cables for the spare un attached hanging under the truck to catch. Traction control and a miss matched tire can make the drive line fight itself.

I had a flat just last week. Also strange noises on my AWD, but just because of the weird tire. Nothing as bad as what you describe. But the experience of driving around on the high pressure for a day as I waited for a repair appointment has motivated me to ask for a full size spare kit next service. From now on I'll option a full size spare if available.

That high pressure spare is a pain. Different circumference than the other tires, which makes the differentials work harder. As mentioned above, really bad handling and interaction with other systems. Of course it's meant to get you 10 miles to the nearest repair station. But these days, in some geographies, that's easier said than done.

BTW, there are some threads on MTC about the different types of tire repairs and why one is better than the other. I'm here to attest that plugs can fail. I had my tire plugged and the plug failed. It was a gentle fail, not a blowout or anything. But I'm here to attest plugs can fail.

Also, after talking with the tire shop guy, I'm trashing my worn out OEM Continentals for Michelins at only 25,000 miles. I'm right at the wear bars. Normal daily driver.

Because of the rural remoteness of where I travel, a plug repair kit is my first line of attack. If that doesn't work then the spare tire is always an option. I hate using a spare tire first just in case another tire might go.
I have NEVER had a temporary plug fail until I could get a permanent patch or a new tire.
then again anything can fail. I can attest to the fact that Brand new engines have failed, New Transmissions have failed too.
It is not a perfect world.
Remember,
Correct Installation is subject to the skill of each installer.

I learned that a plug is different than a patch. A patch lasts much longer. It cost me $35...we will see!
