Just got my maverick. I live in PA. In the morning it has been very cold. Single digits or low teens. When I start the truck it idles very loudly. When I drive it there is a noticeable whiny sound to the engine. Today I left work and could hear the truck idling almost 10 cars away. It seems much louder then the other cars warming up. Once the truck warms up the loud idle and whiner sound seems to fade away. How normal is it? I will try to get a video tomorrow if I can.

edit. I have the 2.0 not the hybrid. Also mine is not a pulsing sound but more of a high idle, but instead of a higher rpm it is just louder.

Is your Maverick a Hybrid OP? There is a big thread about this happening to hybrid owners who do remote starts.

This is normal. In order to meet EPA regulations and with the advent of variable valve timing most manufacturers have programmed their engines to basically open the valves DURING the combustion stroke (at the tail end of it) in order to quickly heat up the catalytic converter so that it's operating at max efficiency much earlier in the process. Think of the explosion of the ignition of the air fuel ratio happening within the cylinder with the valves closed, the process is fairly quiet. Then think of the combustion process happening with the valve being opened at the very end of the combustion stroke and it's louder because now those soundwaves are entering into the exhaust system where there's less material and that explosion is more pronounced.

To put it in layman terms. Take your phone and play music through it's speaker. Now, cover the speaker completely with your hand and you'll notice that the music is much more difficult to hear. To simulate opening the valves during the combustion stroke, lift up the part of your hand that is covering the speaker slightly and notice how much louder the music is even though you haven't completely lifted your hand off the speaker. This is why your engine sounds so much louder during startup compared to when it has reached operating temps and the catalytic converter is at operating temps and the exhaust valves are opening at a normal interval.

My new Maverick 2022 ecoboost 2.0 with 100 miles in odometer started with a clicking sound every time you start the engine later when it heats up the noise goes away. Is that normal?
