Not only did I have some rides in Cobras, I was on a test flight when the pilot in back asked me to "take over for a bit, while I write some things down." Okay, I said, and started flying from the front seat. Keep in mind I was just an engine mechanic. It's 2:30AM over the Mekong Delta and soon the lights of the base and city are behind me, and out in front is total blackness. Not wishing to try my hand at flying IFR (instruments only) because the artificial horizon is inop, I started a left hand turn and thought, what the hell, I'll just dive a little for fun. With that, the pilot in back asked me what was going on. I explained as he took over and announced that he "Must have been asleep." "Oh?" "Do you think you can stay awake long enough to land this thing?" "Uh, I think so."
He had been awake for 27 hours straight and made three trips to Saigon that day.

In my hometown this weekend:

A 95-year-old airplane is the center of attention at the inaugural Wings & Wheels car show this weekend at the Findlay Airport.

An original 1928 Ford Tri-Motor commercial plane, which seats 10 passengers and two pilots, will be providing rides Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the airport, 1615 Gray St.

It’s the first transcontinental plane modeled after a train cart. And, some are calling it the original “built Ford tough.”
