Use a battery maintainer rather than a charger. They are designed to keep the battery at its peak without over charging.
Some chargers have a maintenance mode built in.
Also batteries are not the same as our father's had. An lead acid needs a different charging profile than a AGM and a Lifepo4 (lithium).
I have 1 charger thar does all three as well as maintenance mode and a restore mode for Lead acid.
