Truly amazing twisty roads all over that area of North Carolina.
U.S. 129, aka Tail of the Dragon, then 28 coming north from Franklin, N.C. can be super twisty as is 64 ? heading up from Franklin in to the Highlands.
441 from Franklin up to the end of the Blue Ridge Parkway and then across the mountains in to Pidgeon Forge, Tenn, at least from the Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful twisty drive.
Tons of pancakes in Pidgeon Forge as well as lots of tourist stuff, food and shopping.

We were in Townsend, TN mid April for the Bronco Super Celebration. Had a great time and saw lots of bears, but one thing I will make sure to avoid next year is Pigeon Forge. One heck of a tacky tourist trap but the worst part is the traffic. Doesn't seem to matter when you go the traffic is horrible, we had to pass through it on the way to Townsend and back, I kid you not it took 1.5 hours to go 1.7 miles. Townsend is a nice place, very accommodating to the largest gathering of Broncos in the world. Already planning how I can avoid Pigeon Forge next year.

Cades Cove is a must see.

The wife and I usually spend a couple days in Sevierville, Tn each year.
Close to Knoxville, Tn on one side and Pidgeon Forge on the other.
Lots to do around the area.
Yes, traffic can be bad, more often up towards Knoxville.
But, that can be anywhere.
