This is the kind of driver I worry about. Vehicle safety tech advanced, so he literally takes it as permission to drive more recklessly, by knowingly driving while drowsy.

People like him just miss the point by a mile.
Interesting perspective. There are going to be a lot of drivers where they've never driven a car without these features, so their driving habits are based on what they think they can get away with in that car with all the safety features.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you appear to want to treat the safety tech like Lane Keep Assist and Lane Centering as something that you hope is closer to a self-driving vehicle, giving you permission to drive when you KNOW that you should not be driving.

You miss the point that these systems are in no way capable of driving without you closely monitoring them. They are capable of intervening to save your ass, but it's not a guarantee.

Monitor them the same way you would for a young teenage driver with a learner's permit on day 1 of road driving.
