I was dismissive of the dash mats. But yesterday it occurred to me why it would be a good idea. I saw a Santa Cruz with a 2 x 4 slid through the sliding rear window and resting on the dash.

living in the sunshine state I always install dash covers to eliminate any glare and it protects the dash from sun damage and scratches these are also audio transparent so they don’t muffle the speakers

The last dash I had that was damaged from sun was in a 1970 Torino. Never had any dash since 1984 that needed a cover. But I don;t live in Florida so I don't have that same conditions as you. My late father in law always put them in his cars in Ohio because "they help keep the defroster air warmer"
