To celebrate Marty's 5,000th mile, went ahead and painted my center caps black. I've been thinking about doing this since I got the truck. Definitely a small, simple upgrade, but my rattle can skill set is mediocre at best and I don't like to change something from stock that can't be changed back (without buying more center caps, that is). Thanks @JCraven94 for the inspiration and tips.
I've always thought the all silver steelies look washed out and unfinished, but I'm biased. My first car was the 2001 Jeep Wrangler seen below, so I guess black center cap steelies will always look right to me.
Once the center caps were off, I realized I'm already getting what I assume (hope) is some normal rust? I never took the caps off the Jeep so can't remember if this is standard steelie stuff.
Even as a mediocre spray painter, I didn't have any issues. Scuffed the center caps and put on 4 coats of good ole Rustoleum X2 with primer. Made a makeshift paint rack out of an old ladder and some scrap wood so I could get all sides easily. Before and after shots below.
Have to say I'm happy with how it turned out once they were on the truck. I think the caps mesh well with all the other black accents. For me, this is how it should have come from the factory. The occasional Carvana cash out temptation aside, the first 5,000 miles in Marty the Mav have been great for a lot of different reasons. Here's to many more.
