Area 51 in person from what I have seen (bronco sports driving around) is a MUCH deeper/darker grey/blue then pictures seem to portray. Pictures portray it as a baby blue color most of the time when that is simply not the case even in direct sunlight. Personally love the color in person.
I really like A51 but went with Cactus myself. I think with A51, it looks good with a lot of contrast around it - the bronco sports with a lot of black trim (and all black for the windows/roof) look great - the contrast makes the A51 color pop a lot. But on the Maverick, there isn't much contrast - just black trim around the bottom (and wheels if you go FX4). On the Maverick, it just ends up being too much of a good thing to me! The Cactus is a lot more neutral and from the Bronco Sport and other vehicles with it that I have seen around town, it really looks great even on a much less contrasted vehicle. There happened to be a blackout Ranger (which will be similar to my FX4 build) in CG and it looked fantastic, and this was on an overcast day too. Can't go wrong with either of those colors though!

Cactus grey and Area 51 do not photograph well at all. Love the Area 51 and the Cactus Grey (dint like metallic paint at all) but went with the CG because of how dark the Area 51 look is in person…and the fact that I am not going to wash it…why even kid myself.

I saw the color at the Denver Auto show, Definitely grey/blue rather than blue/grey ; )
Stopped to look at an Area 51 Bronco sport today (not a dealer, just being eccentric in CVS parking lot lol). Looked much darker than the online images in direct Sun and evening shade. Thank goodness. I was about to change colors because I was starting to worry it was powder blue.

I saw Area 51 on a big Bronco, did look a little darker than photos and thank heavens not powder blue, it did have me worried. My Bronco Sport is Cactus Gray, I'd agree with TCK neither color photographs well. Cactus Gray has a greenish hue to it, love the color, I get a lot of compliments on it, you guys that have ordered Cactus Gray will love it.

Yep, the one I saw at the auto show was an Area 51 Bronco, full day light, definitely darker (grey) then (blue) that I have seen in many pictures.

I have worked in lighting and color and I think the term dichrioc isn't really correct. That term refers to two distinct wavelengths propagating differently through an optical system.

What we see with Area51 and Cactus Grey is a trick of color rendering. Think of the truck as a filter that reflects some wavelengths and absorbs others. It's illuminated by a broad spectrum of light, but the content varies depending on time of day, cloud cover, etc. So the light you see reflected differs under different conditions and you perceive a different color. We call that PFM Technology...pure f'n magic.
Correct....somewhere in the 450 to 526nm wavelength

I call it "metamerism."
" a perceived matching of colors with different (nonmatching) spectral power distributions.

My Escape is "dark Persian green" but only at sunset. It's blue otherwise. The best part is the color changes with angle, so it's rarely a single color car, even if it's the same color everywhere. Living with these kind of colors is fun.
I'm afraid you have it backward. Metamers are two spectra that are perceived the same, but actually have different spectral content. That term is related to directly viewing a light source.

Here were talking about reflected light, essentially a spectral filter, in which the color is perceived differently depending on the spectral content of the illumination source.

Related, but different.

I'll add a new complication...a lot of guys have varying degrees of blue shift/blindness. Describing blue is like herding cats or making potato salad.

For fun...

Exactly, they change color when you change the light source.

Under one light source, two samples are the same color.
Under a different light source, the two sample are different colors.

Spectral characteristics of light source, sample and detector are all equally significant to perception.

Follow up. My dealer got in an Area 51 Lariat Lux EB whereas I ordered a Hybrid. I went down twice to see it in person and was completely sold on the color. I did not see it as light blue at all, even in direct sun. Now if they’ll just get it built!
Footnote. The person who ordered it did not take it so they put it on the lot with $7K ADM. Sold in about 3 days but not sure if they got the whole ADM

In person it reminded me of San Jose Sharks color. A lighter shade, but same hue. 🤷🏻‍♂️
